WIPO Judicial Institute
The WIPO Judicial Institute works with national and regional judicial authorities to provide a holistic suite of tailored support, aligned with the legal traditions, and economic and social circumstances of Member States, that empower judiciaries to fulfill their vital role in ensuring that IP, innovation and creative ecosystems in Member States are balanced and effective. In doing so, the WIPO Judicial Institute collaborates closely with all relevant WIPO sectors to bring together WIPO’s multifaceted expertise and to provide an integrated, cross-sectoral framework of resource development and capacity building for national and regional judiciaries to enhance their IP knowledge and skills in administering and adjudicating IP disputes.
The WIPO Judicial Institute also oversees the WIPO Lex database, which contributes to providing IP-related knowledge to a wide general audience by offering a free online portal to 48,000 national, regional and international legal documents, including IP treaties, laws and judgments.
Our activities include:
- providing a global forum for the judicial community, to enable dialogue and learning from the collective experiences of judiciaries in providing balanced and effective dispute resolution in their specific legal, economic and social contexts; supporting member states in strengthening the human and institutional capacities of the judiciary for IP adjudication;
- conducting and coordinating research and studies on judicial systems and decisions on IP;
- enhancing accessibility of information on IP treaties, laws, judgments and judicial administration structures through the WIPO Lex database;
- maximizing institutional synergies by building formal and informal cooperation mechanisms with and among national and regional judicial and quasi-judicial bodies working in IP.
